Giuseppe Memeo, May 14 1977, Milan (Mosaic)

The movement of 1977 was a spontaneous political movement that arose in Italy in 1977. It originated mostly from groups of extra-parliamentary left; as for form and substance, it was completely new compared to previous student movements, such as the protests of 1968. In fact, it was characterized by the declared objection to the system of parties, unions, and even political movements. continue

Dogan Akhanli - FREE!

A German-Turkish writer who is a known critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been arrested in Spain.
Dogan Akhanli, who has written extensively on human rights in Turkey, was detained at the request of Turkish authorities in the city of Granada.
German Green MP Volker Beck said the move was politically motivated and that he had requested that Mr Akhanli should not be extradited to Turkey.
It is unclear on what grounds the arrest warrant was issued.
The move, Mr Beck said, showed that President Erdogan was prepared to "extend his power beyond his country's borders" to "intimidate and pursue [his critics] around the world". Continue

Scorta mediatica #scortamediatica

You are not the majority! #wearethemajority

Over the past two days, we have all witnessed the violence by white supremacists from across the country in Charlottesville, Virginia. While we understand this hatred and vitriol to be part of this country’s long history with white supremacy, we also know this is directly related to the growing popularity and recent rise in far right nationalism as evidenced by more and more blatant attacks on our communities.

Considering the level of violence—from Charlottesville to the White House—we invite you to join us for a national call to confront white supremacy, build power and defend our communities.

Join The Majority today, August 14th at 9PM EST/6PM EST for a national call. Register here. (You must register to join call).

We, people who believe in freedom, justice, and the humanity of all people are the majority. We won’t stand idly by; we will show up united, in a deep abiding love for one another. We are committed to fight for and realize a world in which the inherent humanity of all people is honored. Join us today.

10th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

This year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the landmark UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. This is an opportunity to honour the rights of indigenous peoples and their unique contribution to achieving mutual understanding, peace and sustainable development. Indigenous peoples are custodians and practitioners of unique cultures and relationships with the natural environment. They embody a wide range of linguistic and cultural diversity at the heart of our shared humanity. Protecting their rights and dignity is protecting everyone’s rights and respecting humanity’s soul, past and future.

The protection and well-being of indigenous peoples has never been so important. Despite their cultural diversity and homelands across 90 countries, they share common challenges related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. 370 million indigenous peoples make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population but account for 15 per cent of the poorest.

In this spirit, UNESCO’s latest Global Education Monitoring Report provides concrete guidance and policy advice for the advancement of indigenous peoples’ rights’.

UNESCO launched the Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) programme in 2002 to support governments in creating synergies between scientific and indigenous peoples’ knowledge. This has been furthered through a policy brief on “Indigenous and Local Knowledge(s) and Science(s) for Sustainable Development” issued by The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the United Nations Secretary-General. All this inspires UNESCO’s ongoing work to develop a Policy on Engaging with Indigenous Peoples to ensure a stronger implementation of the UN Declaration.

This will not only be beneficial to indigenous peoples but for all of humanity and our planet.

Let us join our efforts and share this message - #weareindigenous !
